OL109 Lecture 8: PERCETION CHECKING lecture 8
PERCETION CHECKING
Three Part Perception Checking
• PERCEPTION CHECKING: a three part method for verifying the accuracy of
interpretations
1. A description of the behavior you noticed
2. Two or more possible interpretations of the behavior
3. A request for clarification about how to interpret the behavior
• Forces you to think about not only your position but also to think about
another persons potential perspective
Empathy
• An increase in empathy or empathic feeling should also help with aligning
perceptions with another person
• EMPATHY: the ability to project oneself into another persons point of view
in an attempt to experience his / her thoughts and feelings
o Understanding and feeling from someone elses point of view, what
they are going through
o A shift in perspective and an increase in identification with another
person. This shift in perspective and emphasis on other identification
will also serve a perception checking function and assist in that entire
process
o Building empathy necessarily involves perception checking.
• SYMPATHY: feeling compassion for someone, but not experiencing thar
persons point of view or emotions
o Sympathy is understanding people from your point of view, what
someone is going through.
Requirements for Empathy
• Open-mindedness: set aside for the moments your own beliefs. attitudes, and
values and to consider those of the other person
o Being open-minded is often difficult because people confuse
understanding anothers position with accepting it
• Imagination: you need enough imagination to be able to picture another
persons background and thoughts
• Commitment: listening to unfamiliar, often confusing information takes time
and is not always pleasant. Empathy requires considerable energy and effort
and you need to make sure that your own needs for comfort and compassion
are met in order to be prepared for the challenge
