February 3 2014 Economics and Ecology Value of Nature ­ “You see that tree over there? It doesn’t have any value until its cut down.  Unless, of course, you tree huggers decide you’ll pay money to save it so that  you can enjoy it. Think your cronies can raise enough money to save the entire  forest”  ­ Natural entities have value only as economic resources ­ Thus, if you want to preserve nature, you must be willing to pay  Economic Efficiency  ­ Pareto Optimality: A state of affairs is the best we can achieve if there is at  least one person who prefers it to any (feasible) alternative, and nobody who  prefers the alternative to it Baxter, “People or Penguins” ­ Four Goals o Agents are free to act as long as it does not interfere with the interests  of other human beings  o Waste is bad o Each human is an end and not a means to an end o Humans should be free and able to improve their share/satisfaction ­ Environmental problem: Use of DDT in
