Unit 9 workplace issues and employee rights. Could (cid:271)e ter(cid:373)ed (cid:858)hu(cid:373)a(cid:374) resources ethics": workplace issues concerning the fair treatment of employees. The traditional free-market capitalist doctrine on employment policy is employment at will. Employment at will (eaw): in the absence of a specific contract, an employer may hire, fire, or promote any employee. It is defended on the basis of property rights, freedom of owners and managers to do what they want with their business. This would be reasonable in a condition of rough equality, or a 19th century world of small farmers, tradesmen and merchants. But we live in a world where giant corporations dominate whole industries, a world of employees and bosses. Eaw does not promote equal freedom since owners and managers are in positions of much greater power than workers. Firing is a bla(cid:272)k (cid:373)ark o(cid:374) a (cid:449)orker(cid:859)s record and a barrier to getting a new job.
