Scholars argue that the decisions that are made by the government in Canada and the US reflect
the interests of certain communities. For ex: the business community. Others argue that there are
various organizations that help make decisions
Who gets to exercise power? Those we give the authority to
Authority:
Getting out of the car for a police officer vs. a naked person. Invested not in the
individual but the work position.
- Involves granting rights and responsibilities to particular individuals and groups so
they can make the community function. Socially approved power.
- Is the right to exercise this power that is accepted by “the governed” (the people) as
Legitimate
- So, legitimacy is key to governing. Without it they must use more coercion.
- A person receives power and legitimacy because of the institution that he/she
represents. Ex: police, judges, members of parliament
- Authority is followed more with force
- If people believe your institution is corrupt you are going to have trouble with
legitimacy.
Three types of Authority:
1. Traditional (Personal)
- Prevalent in pre-industrial societies
- Power is vested in a particular person die to heredity or custom
- Authority is personal and incontestable
2. Charismatic (Personal)
- Grounded in personal qualities. Their ability to mobilize people for example.
- People are attracted to this in chaotic times
- Less prevalent today
3. Rational-Legal Authority (Impersonal)
