For the Ontario Provincial elections of 2011, I decided to help volunteer with the New
Democratic Party or also referred as NDP. The candidate in my area was Wendy Byrne and this was in
Ottawa West Nepean. Although I only volunteered for the limited number of hours it showed me that in
order for a campaign to be successful, it must have good time management and the right people
supporting the campaign with a hard-working attitude as well. The main focus that the campaign had
me do was go around from door to door and drop pamphlets in their mailbox or if possible
communicate with the voters in the area to try to give them a better understanding of what exactly
Wendy Byrne and the NDP's were going to accomplish or goals that they were going to try and attain.
This was a first for me due to I have never been put into a situation like the one that was handed to me,
I am good with talking to people and would consider myself a people's person but in this certain
situation it is a whole different mentality when talking to a possible voter. Some helpful advice that I
was given was not to ever pressure a person or make them feel on the spot so having to try and keep
them in a comfortable state while still managing to relay my message to them was a difficult task at
times. I felt though as I went from house to house and when I ran into people I was able to handle the
message that needed to be put out to the people with ease. I was gaining confidence with every person I
spoke too and it really gave me a whole different feel when trying to pursuit someone into believing a
certain aspect without pressuring them or feeling forced. This experience showed me a totally different
view when approaching any election as I respect what these people do a lot more than I use to as I had
just a brief time working alongside them and getting to see exactly how much hard work needs to be
put in. In the end, Wendy Byrne's campaign did not do to well but it was expected as the liberals and
conservatives were the favourites in this certain area the entire time which made my task more difficult.
This was due to the fact that it is extremely tough to be an underdog in an election because that certain
party has to put in twice the amount of work to just try and maintain as many amount of votes as
possible. If I have an opportunity like this one again, I will put more of my time in helping these people
because the more you put into something the more you will get out of it especially if I would ever have
a certain issue in my area. They would know who I am and deal with my complaint with a little more
care in my opinion because it is somebody who helped maintain them that status in that community and
they would not want to disappoint their community.
