Inequality in brazil: 20th most unequal country in the world. In the 1990s they were the 3rd most unequal in the world, things are beginning to change. Economy in brazil there was no middle class, either a slave, peasant, or part of the upper class (the elites). Church supported the message of hierarchy and told the poor groups to accept their place in society: no revolution, feudal relations, slavery. The economy itself was heavily supported by slavery, and used racial inequalities: power of the rich, dependency on single exports. 1850s-70s - stable, golden years of the empire. Some groups in the south feeling neglected and need more distribution and power in their states. There is a little bit of unrest of political groups in the south. Area which was dominated by cotton plantations. Plantation owners were losing money because of the drought - were attempting to sell slaved to other parts of brazil.
