Sort of a mixed constitution florence recognized they were a plurality. 1434-94 medici family took over and dominated city power. Power was shared between nobles, guilds and city people. Took over all aspects of government without formally changing everything. Machiavelli: born in 1969: during first years of medici rule. 1498-1512 ambassador of the republic as ambassador, he was sent to various places like venice, switzerland and germany. All of his writing life took place when the medici were in rule from 1512-27. Squittino- selection of those eligible for public office. Problem because everyone in florence has debt expect the noble families. Hardly anyone of the common people were eligible for office because they had debt.
