This emphasis can lead to a distortion in thinking because it can overemphasize one view at the expense of other equally valid views. In early days (ww1 times), nurses were portrayed as moral figures above all suspicion. They were seen as mother figures to the wounded. Following ww1, the image of nurses as guardian angels gave way, and they were instead depicted as fighters of the residual damages from the war. It has only been in the last few decades that these views have begun to fade. The metaphor of nurses as a surrogate mother may make it seem as if nursing is like mothering anyone can do it. This is not the case however, as nursing requires certain skill and knowledge and this metaphor takes away from that.
