They concluded that the mind and body are distinct and that the mind continues after the body dies. Socrates therefore looked for concept that were the essence of human nature. For example, he tried to identify why something was beautiful. Plato believed that certain ideas and concepts were pure and signified an ultimate reality. He believed that we could use reasoning to uncover core ideas embedded in the human soul. Wrote some of the first important theories about dreams, sleep, sensations, and learning. Promoted empirical, or testable, investigations of the natural world.
