PS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Depressant, Habituation, Operant Conditioning
Document Summary
Moderate doses: reduce feelings of anxiety and produces euphoria. High doses: slow vital life processes, can be fatal. Effect on gaba neurotransmitter system (gaba reduces anxiety) so if there is an increase on gaba anxiety decreases. Initial upped phase then brain centres become depressed. Increase activity of gaba (main inhibitory neuro-transmitter- anxiety control) Decreases activity of glutamate (major excitatory neurotransmitter) Combination creates high and then down phase. Slows brain areas that control judgment, inhabitation, behaviour (speech, motor functioning, emotional expressions) E. g. , sleeping pills and anti-anxiety drugs (e. g. , xanax, valium) *****midterm question example: what neurotransmitter is affected by this drug***** Opium, heroin, morphine, codeine, methadone, oxycodone, fentanyl. Bind to opioid receptors in the cns: provides pain relief, cause mood change, highly addictive and traumatic withdrawal. Increase neural firing and arouse central nervous system. Increase blood pressure, heart rate, respiration and alertness: ex. Increases energy and alertness, reduces appetite, produces euphoric feelings.
