PS102 Lecture Notes - Problem Solving, Partial Trace, Reinforcement
Document Summary
Detect the information (the code) prepare it to be placed in memory. Code can be sound pattern, letter sequence, image, tactile cue, smell, etc. What is the operant term used to denote when something is added to the environment that increases the probability that a behaviour will reoccur. Positive reinforcement involves adding something to the environment that increases the probability that a behaviour will reoccur. Iconic stores visual information: lasts fractions of a second (1/4 of a second) Echoic stores auditory information: lasts about 2 seconds, partial trace can last longer. Various forms: images (visual, sounds (phonological, meaning (semantic, physical action (motor) Form of memory code does not correspond to form of original stimulus. Must work on the information or you lose it. Rapidly lost unless we actively do something with it. Rehearsal (default strategy), other strategies to hold onto information. Decay degeneration of the memory trace over time; limit is about 20 seconds.
