Drive reduction theory: assumes arousal should = 0, good for many functions biological needs, but not sex or some other needs, sex is opposite, we want to be aroused. Theories of motivation: motivated to be aroused (not zero, arousal: persons state of alertness and mental and physical activation, arousal theory: we are motivated to maintain an optimal level of arousal. Sex is natural and normal : not a basic need (wont die without it, without sex none of us would be here, how do scientists (or you) find out about sex, you ask!!! Read journals: scientists observe and measure, two biggest studies, kinsey 1940"s (usa) refuted some common beliefs about sex. Interviewed 5300 men and 5940 women: 300-500 questions that were not commonly asked. Outcomes: variability in sexual practice, not performed just one way, many alternatives, people masturbated, premarital sex.
