PS263 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Supplementary Motor Area, Corticospinal Tract, Premotor Cortex
Document Summary
Smooth muscles- control the digestive system and other organs. Skeletal/striated muscles- control movement of the body in relation to the environment. Antagonistic muscles- allows you to move your arm/leg back and forth because there is a flexor muscle (brings hand toward you) and an extensor muscle (straightens arm) Fast twitch fibers- fast contractions w/ rapid fatigue. Rely on them for strenuous activity (i. e. running) Fatigue b/c they are anaerobic- doesn"t require oxygen at the time but need oxygen for recovery (build up an oxygen debt) Slow twitch fibers- slow contractions w/ no fatigue. Rely on them for nonstrenuous activity (i. e. talking) Do not fatigue b/c they are aerobic- they use oxygen during their movements. Muscle proprioceptor- control movement of a muscle by detecting the stretch and tension of it and send messages that allow the spinal cord to adjust its signals. Muscle spindle- type of proprioceptor, a receptor parallel to the muscle that responds to a stretch.
