Document Summary
What is a group: according to marvin shaw, all groups have one thing in common. This being that all members of the group interact with each other: a (cid:862)group(cid:863) is t(cid:449)o or (cid:373)ore people (cid:449)ho i(cid:374)tera(cid:272)t a(cid:374)d influence another, groups per(cid:272)ei(cid:448)e the(cid:373)sel(cid:448)es as (cid:862)us(cid:863) i(cid:374) (cid:272)o(cid:374)trast to (cid:862)the(cid:373)(cid:863, e. g. A computer lab with 5 students in it, is not considered a group if they are not interacting with each other or influencing each other. Joggers on a jogging path sped up as they came upon a woman seated on the grass. If she was facing the jogger rather than having her back turned to them the joggers were recorded to speed up: the self-consciousness we feel when being evaluated also interferes with our behaviour. In group efforts, people are tempted to free-ride benefiting from the group, but giving little in return: when individuals cannot be evaluated or held accountable, loafing becomes more likely.
