PS275 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Language Acquisition Device, Memory Span, Long-Term Memory
Document Summary
Information-processing approach: emphasizes the sequence of actions that occurs when individuals handle or use information. The assumption is that information starts in the environment and is processed by the mind. The theory, as stated previously, is based on the metaphor of human thought as a computer. Multistore model: depicts info as owing through 3 processing units: sensory (raw sensory output), long term (limited amount of info for several seconds) and short term (vast and relatively permanent storehouse of info, working memory) Executive control processes: processes involved in regulating attention and determining what to do with the info just gathered or retrieved from long term memory. Metacognition: knowledge about cognition and about the regulation of cognitive activities. Span of apprehension: # of items that people can keep in mind at any one time or the amount of info that people can attend to at a time without operating mentally to store info.
