Historically, marriage provided financial security and procreation. In homosexual romantic relationships, sex and status not confounded. Majority of adults" desire to get married: desire slightly less in women than men. Most important characteristics of a mate: both sexes seek someone kind, understanding, honest, sense of humour, open, expressive. Both sexes have similar reasons for entering romantic relationships: support and companionship. Sex differences more likely to appear when relationship less serious. Gay men and lesbians generally value same characteristics as heterosexuals: economic resources not as important for lesbians as they are for heterosexual women. Like heterosexual men, gay men value mate"s physical attractiveness. Like heterosexual, homosexuals prefer mates similar to self.
