Diagnosed groups vs. range of normal variation: ex: diagnosed social phobics and non-social phobics vs. high and lows on a social anxiety scale in normal population. Easy to find pathological symptoms in normal populations: symptoms are present in people who don"t have the actual clinical disorder, symptoms don"t necessarily cause the same degree of distress. Just because you are on the scale does not mean you are diagnosed with anxiety: much more than obtaining a signal score on questionnaire. Ocd symptoms are also present in normal population: ex: people counting to a certain number (liking it, some people think disturbing thoughts. Pushing people, they don"t know off subway tracks. Analog studies are a helpful way to understand psychopathological disorders. Sometimes seen as more useful and instructive, sometimes less. Aries with view of psychopathology as being dimensional or categorical. Dimensional: disorder is only a matter of degree, not of kind. Categorical: disorder reflects a qualitative difference.
