Document Summary

Defined as a lasting change caused by experience. Has to be inferred rom behavior cannot be directly observed. Animals (dogs, monkeys, rats and mice) were focus on studies of learning. Associative learning: change occurring as a result of experiences that lead us to link two or more stimuli together. Form of learning where organisms decrease response to stimulus after repeated stimulus presentation. Animal/person has learned to ignore something that is unimportant. If there is no threat, the animal/person gets used to it: feels it is unimportant. Dishabituation: full-strength recovery of habituated response in presence of a new stimulus. Habituation/dishabituation response has a clear adaptive value b/c it allows organisms to ignore stimuli that don"t convey info of biological significance but to respond to stimuli that are important. Habituation is used as a tool for familiarizing children with stimuli then testing for recognition and discrimination. Once a stops looking at an object of interest baby has become habituated to it.
