Chapter 15 - Treatment Insight (talk) Therapies 1. Psychoanalysis (mental illness is caused by unconscious conflicts, motive, defense mechanisms) Freud would assume there ate unconscious elements o Tools  Free association (spontaneous expression of thoughts and feelings)  First thing that comes to your mind  Mall = corn  Father = lost  Dream analysis  Our unconscious does not protect itself when sleeping: dreams can reveal motives and desires, etc.  Transference (unconscious transfer of emotions etc. onto therapist)  They unconsciously transfer their feelings about the issue or the person onto the therapist.  This is a good step in therapy because the client is able to express emotion without fear of retaliation  Resistance  A defensiveness that a client shows at some point that hinders therapy 2. Client Centered Therapy (mental illness cause by incongruence)  an inconsistency between our self concept and reality o Tools  Genuineness  trust; very honest and not fake  Unconditional positive regard  acceptance of client, no matter what; valuing the clients feelings above your own opinions.  Empathy  Sensitive, understanding the experience  Active Listening  “Uh huh”, nodding, “I understand”  Paraphrasing  summarizing 3. Cognitive Therapy (mental illness is caused by irrational thoughts:) o Overgeneralization  drawing negative conclusions based on one piece of information o Catastrophizing o “Shoulds”)  they think I should o Tools  Reason/Challenge  Do these thoughts have rational support  Challenge the proof  What’s the worst/best that could happen  Ex. Lost, but could you really be lost in a mall  Ex. Having fun  Self-instuctional training  education (problem definition, approach)  give the individual information about their illness or fear  give an approach that would comfort them in order to face their fear  Rehearsal  They would rehearse the situation in less stressful places giving them exposure to how they would combat this fear without actually facing it.  Implementation  Would actually face the situation 4. Positive (Psycho)therapy/Psychology  tries to focus the good in the individual and not the negative 5. Group therapy o Social Support  Best predictor  Psychological and physical health  “I’m not alone” but Behaviour Therapies (mental illness is caused by learned, maladaptive behaviours) 1.
