Information is very briefly retained in original sensory form. To get information into working (short term) memory and then into long-term memory, you need to encode it. There are two ways to encode : automatic processing: when you automatically remember something with no effect, effortful processing: when have to work to memorize something. Working memory: a short-term memory store for information you are thinking about right now, including: recalling memories such as a phone number, day dreaming, problems you are currently solving, reading. Long-term memory: all of the information we have gathered that is available for use, such as acquired skills, people we know, etc: unlimited capacity, organizing information is necessary for proper storage in long-term memoy.
