Endocrine system made up of various glands that release hormones. A certain level of body fat is needed to produce a protein called leptin. Once this level of fat has been met, hypothalamus increases production and release of the hormone gnrh (gonadotropic releasing hormone) Pituitary gland releases 2 gonadotropins (fsh and lh) Gonadotropins stimulates development of gametes (egg cell in females and sperm cells in males) Gonads= sex glands ovaries in females; testes in males. In response to gonadotropin stimulation, gonads increase sex hormone production. Increase in estradiol (type of estrogen) in females) Increase in testosterone (type of androgen) in males. Virtually, all the studies considered in the order of pubertal development have been conducted with white adolescents in the west. Three studies demonstrate the variations that may exist in other groups: worthman, 1987, lee, chang, and chan, 1963, herman-giddens et al. , 1997;2001.
