Document Summary

How adjacent sentences in text relate to one another (local coherence) Local propositions (in sentences) support and add meaning to global structure. Overall theme, forms the general meaning of discourse. The goal of discourse processing is to build a representation of the situation that the text describes. A production system builds a discourse representation in cycles. Each cycle has a construction and an integration phase. Automatically activate knowledge based on association with individual words and propositions. Meaning is constructed by activating nodes in neighborhood of word through spreading activation. Constraint satisfaction processes reduce pattern of activated nodes to be those most closely relevant to the overall context. Activated nodes correspond to propositions active in working mem. Link propositions to each otherm and to preceding material. Propositions: the smallest unit of language that can be assigned a truth calue, a verb and its arguments.
