Gandhi defined truth as god; at other times he essentially defined it as ahimsa or non-violence. All of these principles, for gandhi, were manifestations of truth. Perhaps the si(cid:374)gle (cid:373)ost i(cid:374)trigui(cid:374)g phase of mahat(cid:373)a ga(cid:374)dhi"s life (cid:449)as his earl(cid:455) life: the period of his youth, his training as a lawyer, and his settlement into the practice of law in south africa. This period extends from his birth in 1869 through to about 1914, the date when gandhi left.
