Christianity holds special place for atonement, forgiveness of sins and transgressions. Judaism: blood sacrifice (bull or goat sacrificed at temple) Since destruction of temple in jerusalem in early first century, judaism has no longer practiced sacrifice of animals. Jewish practice on yom kippur takes metaphoric concepts of the sacrifice. Jesus is important in blood sacrifice and atonement: blood is important in forgiveness of sins bc its representative of life, recognizing the sin you might commit as something going against what. God gave you, therefore god requires some form of sacrifice. Jesus becomes the sacrifice, takes role of the animal, his blood is sacrificed. This is called substitutionary atonement: substituted to bring about the atonement and reconnection with god. Jesus takes role of blood sacrifice humanity into death. Christianity doesn"t end there, idea is that jesus is killed, taking sins of. Later into death is typically talked about as into hell, the realm of satan.
