Components of culture: material culture: (artifacts) art, buildings, weapons and machines, non material culture: symbols we use to give meaning to, and represent our world in a particular way (ex. If (cid:455)ou fi(cid:374)d a sti(cid:272)k i(cid:374) the forest, it"s a (cid:373)aterial, if (cid:455)ou take it a(cid:374)d start usi(cid:374)g it as a walking stick, you have given it a different meaning. Allows us to construct, share and externalize meanings. Allows all human experience to be cumulative. Determines our consciousness: we learn a certain way of thinking and perceiving. Ideology: marxist understand culture as ideology ideologies: are shared cultural knowledge or sets of beliefs which serve the interests of particular groups. Interested in how people were convinced to believe these. Marxists believed that people thought, that if they worked hard, they could get promoted and well on your way. If you play by the rules, ideologies are a distortion of reality.
