Social stratification: the layering of groups of peope within a nation. Affects our orientations to life and the way e see the world. Dived according to power, property, and prestige. Is a way of ranking large groups of people into a hierarchy that shows their relative privileges. Slavery: ownership of some people by others, most common in agricultural societies, based on 3 factors, debt, violation of the law, war and conquest. Clan: every individual is linked to a large network of relatives called a clan, common in agricultural societies, like a greatly extended family. If a clan has higher status so do the individuals. Ideology: a system of beliefs that justifies social arrangements. Means of production: the tools, factories, land, and investment capital used to produce wealt. Marx considered this to be what social class depended on.
