Context: rising tide of anti-feminist conservative political leaders. One result: many feminists were led to examine second wave feminism of the 1960s and 1970s with a critical eye. Black and hispanic feminists took an especially active role in this critical reexamination. Acknowledged the gains from second wave feminism. But: felt that second wave feminism often reflected concerns of white middle class women while civil rights movement reflected concerns of black males. Not logically necessary, but that(cid:859)s the (cid:449)ay it has (cid:449)orked out. No black women hired at gm before 1964. All black women lost jobs during 1970 recession. Sued, arguing discrimination based on gender and race. Why: because gm had hired black workers before 1964 and had hired female workers before 1964. Court ruled out discrimination by gender (alone) and discrimination by race (alone) Women: felt that being black and female had prevented them from being hired before.
