Can be used to analyze how people commonly understand the world. Course theme: sociological perspectives vs. common sense perspectives of the social world. 4 main theoretical traditions in sociology: functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, feminism. Wrote a book on suicide in 1897- challenged the common sense notions on how we think of suicide. He challenged the notion that suicide is always self-interested. He said when we treat suicide like this, we ignore peoples relation with society. Suicide results from social conditions (bullying, isolation, impoverished, or acting as a soldier- going to war is suicide) One of the first to use french statistics. He discovered higher suicide rates amongst in 19th century france-: Unmarried men (opposed to married or women) Seniors (opposed to young or middle aged) Social integration: connection between individuals and the group.
