Document Summary

Feminist theory that examines the relationship between patriarchy and capitalism. Heidi argues that you cannot understand patriarchy without understanding women in the workforce. Men have control over women in the workforce. Class is the axis of exploitation in capitalism. Sex/gender is the axis of oppression in patriarchy. Men are in charge of the public sphere. Men are the breadwinners (productive labour- contributing to the economy) Men"s work was seen as more productive than women"s work. Working class trade unions did not want women to enter the workforce. Women are in charge of the private sphere. Unions were fighting for living family wage aka the male bread winner which is what made them have higher wages so that the women could stay home. Women are not fit for intelligent decision making and are meant to be at home raising and caring for children/home/family. There is no production without reproduction and reproductive labour is itself productive.
