Sy 101 - lecture 2 - the sociological perspective. Stresses social contexts in which people live and how they influence their lives. Social location: occupation, income, gender, age and ethnicity. External influences: people"s experiences - which are internalized and become apart of a person"s thinking and motivations. Social imagination: a way of looking at the world that allows links between apparently private problems. Sociological imagination or perspective enables us to grasp the connection between history/bibliography (mills 1959) History impacts present living -- allows us to understand and develop deeper meaning. Macrosociology: focuses on broad features of society. ie social class and patriarchy. Microsociology: emphasizes social interaction ie. survival strategies of homeless people. Emerged middle of 19th century with use of scientific methods to test ideas. Emile durkheim (1885 - 1917): social integration versus suicide. Weber wanted sociology to be value free and objective.
