Religion governs fewer aspects of life than it used to. Other institutions, such as medicine, psychiatry, criminal justice, and education, have grown in importance. Secular schools have substantially replaced the church and religious schools as educational institutions. The educational system often creates social cohesion. There are many classical approaches in the sociology of religion. When people live together, they come to share common sentiments and values, which form a collective conscience that is larger than any individual is. Collective conscience: a collection of everyone"s beliefs and sentiments (most common ones). This is a representative example of our shared common ideas, and for durkheim this meant religion. Keep in mind that durkheim grew up during the industrial revolution, so he was alive during a period of great change.
