When people live together, they come to share common sentiments and values, which form a collective conscience that is larger than any individual is. Collective conscience: a collection of everyone"s beliefs and sentiments (most common ones). This is a representative example of our shared common ideas, and for durkheim this meant religion. Keep in mind that durkheim grew up during the industrial revolution, so he was alive during a period of great change.
