WS100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Slut, Heterosexuality, Thesis Statement
WS-100-B September 11th, 2017
Ofļ¬ce Hours: Mondays and Wednesdays - 2:30-3:30pm (R106 M)
-Canada has a terrible history of colonialism and itās still bad
-In 1887 the indian act came into play, to make it a white country
-We need to understand that in nunavut today, it took a white man to bring it to our
attention
-When thinking of the people affected by the storms and hurricanes, we must
consider the people in prisons as well. Think about what happens. Youāre stuck
there, the water is rising, there is no food. You cannot eat under these
circumstances.
-When we read the news, we must consider all the circumstances. The news is telling
us what to think, and isnāt giving us the chance to ask questions.
What we do in this course is ask these questions!
-When we call someone a bitch, weāre shutting down their voice.
-We are using surveillance over them to make sure that we all perform and think the
same way.
-When we call someone a slut, we are surveilling their sexual behaviour and telling
them that it is wrong for them to have some sort of control over their sexual life.
-When we use words such as ārapeā- āI was raped by that examā - you are
desensitizing the real meaning.
-By taking this course we create a better society - it doesnāt matter if it gets you a job
or not.
-A binary is two opposite ends. When we use words such as āa slutā we have placed
any women who activates any similar behaviours in a form that makes us look better.
-We have the highest rates of hate crime in our region. All the reported cases exist or
come from university campuses.
-We have a sophisticated practice maintaining binary. The only way to create a more
civil society is to destruct these practices. (Religion, sexuality, race, etc.)
-When we talk about equality, we use it very freely, the problem is that we donāt ask
who is equal and in what system.
-When we talk about equality, we talk about equality in pre-existing systems. (This
does not include colonialism).
-Because iām white, I donāt have to worry about the same thingās that other people
have to worry about. When we use the word āfeministā people think of lesbians, a
woman wanting to be better than man, etc.
-1 in 4 women in this country will experience poverty in their lives (university
education included)
-The stereotype of a feminist is being man hating because we have to call out
systems such as patriarchy, etc.
-When we talk about patriarchy we are talking about
