Lecture 2: theories and methodology of childhood- part 1. Sociologists have been studying other marginalized groups (i. e. minorities/ women) Must be shaped and guided by external forces. Appropriation: child is taken over by society and trained to become a functioning member of society. Functionalist (talcott parsons): child is the pebble that is thrown into the pond and creates ripples that extend outward until the child becomes a part of society (the pond) Greater access to cultural resources means greater access to wealth (and higher social class) Cultural capital having assets that give us social mobility. These assets are both tangible and intangible, as with skills and music. Differential treatment of individuals in social institutions. Habitus: gender, race and class determine are reproduced through tastes, preferences and future action. As-if assumption : adults treat children as of they understand language and routines.
