Lecture 10: children and social justice: part 1. Chronic disease: a disease lasting 3 months or more; cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medication. Asthma: a respiratory condition marked by spasms of bronchi of the lungs; hard to breath. Type 1 diabetes: is a disease in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin (the hormone that helps your body control your sugar levels in your blood) Kids with chronic illness are often used to raise awareness about diseases, or funding for research. Cindy dell clark used interviews and observations to see how kids cope. Recall the ritual of the tooth fairy. Parents and children use the tooth fairy to take the child"s mind off of the pain and blood taste that comes with teeth falling out. Why children do not like the doctor"s office. Stigma: the doctor"s office means your sick.
