Primary focus on business, but also non-profit organizations and so on. ~ reflected the rise of the modern, publicly-traded corporation: original intent was to develop a professional degree similar to law & medicine: Manage corporations in the interest of a variety of stakeholders: shareholders customers employees society. Carnegie & ford business education in late 1950s. Shifted to a more traditional academic curriculum with specialized disciplines. Led to greater legitimacy and power within universities. No textbooks, interviewed businessmen, wrote a detailed account on what they did, then read a case > discuss in class > offer recommendations. Students take on the role of decision maker. Activities are created by brevity, variety and discontinuity. Ritual and ceremonial (christmas dinners, meeting dignitaries, giving out gold watches) Processing of soft information that links org. to its environment. Folklore: managers need information provided by formal management systems. Fact: managers favour verbal media, telephone calls and meetings over documents.
