Mental Illness in Canada
- Insurers are finding that it is the fastest growing category for disability costs.
- Depressed employees are 7 times more likely to report decreased effectiveness at work.
- In 2002, depression, anxiety disorders and addiction replaced air quality, unsafe plant
sites and dangerous manufacturing practices as bigger threats to workplace health.
- Fewer than 20% of those you need treatment actually get it. (70% of these are in the
workforce)
Workplace Psychosocial Hazards
- Work overload and time pressures
- Lack of influence over day-to-day work
- Too little or too much responsibility
- Ambiguity in job responsibilities
- Lack of status rewards (appreciation)
- Discrimination or harassment
- Poor communication
- Lack of respect or support for work/life balance
- Neglect of legal and safety obligations
Depression and Anxiety
- By far the most common mental disorders
- They are not functions of character or weakness
- Physical conditions centered in the brain but affecting the whole body with psychological
implications and effects on our perspective, concentration, behaviour and capacity to
think clearly
- Studies of 100 “mental and nervous” insurance claims showed that:
o 10 % were malingerers
o 90 % were legitimate
Recognizing Depression in the Workplace
- Decreased productivity
- Lack of cooperation/negative attitude
o difficulty handling negative feedback
- Safety risks, accidents (mind not on task)
- Absenteeism/late
- Frequent statements about being tired all the time
