COURSE DESCRIPTION
We are currently in the middle of an 'Information Revolution' and virtually all job occupations
have a requirement for computer literacy. The purpose of this course is to introduce the student
to computer information systems with an emphasis on the hardware, software and basic
Microsoft Windows XP knowledge (file management-maintaining storage locations, backups,
etc.) and to give students a basic knowledge of Excel 2007. As with all areas of specialization, a
great deal of terminology (new words) must be understood for the employee to be able to
function properly in the field. This course will provide most of that terminology along with the
basic concepts of computer input devices, processing concepts, and output devices.

Students will also be introduced to the Internet and web pages through the use of the course
Blackboard site. Because of the dynamic nature of the computer industry, students will be
expected to read copies of trade newspapers such as 'Toronto Computes' (free in many computer
stores) and/or the Toronto Star and/or Toronto Sun (Business section), and the Internet for the
latest new computer information, devices and software. Information from these media in addition
to Internet Web sites will be discussed in class. As well, extensive use of the textbook Internet
course Website (www.emcp.net/CUT3e) and College course teacher's Website
(mycourses.humber.ca) will be expected.
What is taught or covered in class may be different and/or more recent than what is contained in
the textbooks: please refer to in-class instruction when studying for tests or exams.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the workings of a computer system and define the
basic terminology of the computer field.
2. Discuss and use the Internet and the World Wide Web.
3. Describe the various system software and application software.
4. Describe and understand the different storage media that can be used with a computer
system.
5. Describe and understand the various uses of communication devices and different types of
networks.
6. Discuss the various types of computer related threats and security measures a
person/business requires.
7. Have an understanding of spreadsheet software and apply Microsoft Excel features like
PivotTables and PivotCharts to solve accounting and business related problems.
8. Use built-in Excel functions including SUMIF, AVERAGEIF, and CONCATENATE
functions, and create formulas to automate tasks and solve problems.
9. Demonstrate use of formatting techniques in Excel.
10. Demonstrate punctuality and time management by arriving on time for tests and handing in
assignments and completing mandatory projects according to professor-required deadlines.
