October 25 1861 TSX was formally created in the passing of a resolution by 24 men who had gathered at the Masonic Hall in Toronto to establish a framework to introduce the exchange of financial instruments With only 18 securities mainly related to banks and real estate listed at the time trading was limited to daily halfhour sessions during which a handful of transactions took place 1913 TSX built its own building on Bay Street and moved into it and introduced the first printout ticker that provided a printout of trading prices as well as bidask quotations for stocks However we now have access to electronic tapes that scroll across computer screens1934 In order to cope with the economic crisis the TSX merged with its main competitor the Standard Stock and Mining Exchange adopting the Toronto Stock Exchange name1958 TSXs board of governors tightened disclosure requirements requiring listed companies to file statements disclosing any change in the companys affairs that might affect the price of its sharesNovember 18 1977 TSX launched the worlds first Computer Assisted Trading System CATS which handled the process of order matching and price setting through bid and ask prices1996 It became the first exchange in North America to introduce decimal trad
