Idea of terrorism and image of terrorist is hyper-visible in popular culture. How society understands what gets called terrorism. What ideas and assumptions bundled in with image of terrorism. Case surrounding peter king, congressman from ny, chair of house homeland security. Became driving force behind congressional hearings about examining radicalization of. He believed muslims in america were becoming more radicalized. Deeper assumption was ideas that american muslims were somehow naturally more loyal to islam than us. Therefore, believed that they were more prone to becoming radicalized. As hearings begin, controversy and backlash begins. Criticisms begin from both muslim and non-muslim groups. Didn"t bring experts on subjects in, rather just those who gave opinions on matter to congress. Few denied that radical religious groups existed, but people questioned why king focused on islam. Idea that they are somehow suspicious in their nature, simply by being muslim. Counter-arguments that it comes from multiple places. History of mass shootings across u. s. from non-muslims.
