Document Summary

Week 19 - different enterprise: cooperatives and worker-recovered companies. Capitalist enterprise - private ownership of a company, or shareholders seeking pro t. Worker position is marginalized, but unions can provide limited negotiation over working conditions. Socialist enterprise - state controlled, ostensibly democratic but beholden to the state and its interests which may be far removed. Worker position - work committees, but still can be marginalized. Enterprises that are neither necessarily pro t-seeking or owned by a tiny minority. Much more decentralized workplaces without state dominance. Workers have a much higher degree of involvement and satisfaction. Enterprise can satisfy broader needs - workers, consumers, communities. Less capitalist or socialist, more of a hybrid situation. Autonomous association of people who jointly own and democratically control an enterprise. Longstanding and high success rate form of enterprise - normally 75% survive rst four years versus less than half of other businesses. Number of types need to be examined.
