Patterned, repetitive and symbolic enactment of a cultural belief. Primary purpose is to teach and impose certain belief systems on individuals. E. g. judicial swear in where you are engaging in a court case, opening ceremonies in. Symbolism is often done by older people who teach younger children they are learning cultural information that have that information. All rituals are culturally specific and gendered. A series of rituals that move individuals form one social state or social status to another. Victor tuner (early 1970s: separation-- individuals gets separated from society; e. g. cutting someone off from their social community, transition liminal stage; statusless zone. Turner believes liminal stage is most important- when we are in this and we feel lost we are with other people who are transitioning as well, feeling of solidarity and inclusive love and bonding; Importance of (cid:862)rites of passage(cid:863) (cid:894)according to turner(cid:895)
