ARTH 3710 Lecture 15: Art History tutorial 4
Document Summary
A diaspora has been defined as scattered population located someone different than their place of origin, commonly in reference to the jewish population who live outside israel. James clifford in diasporas and barbara kirshenblatt-gimblett in spaces of dispersal both explore the topic of diaspora and displacement in a contemporary light. Exhibited in both readings is an effort to define what a diasporas is. However they differ a lot in both their approach to defining and the definition of the term that they come to. Clifford seeks to examine the concept of diaspora through comparing to to what it is not. In his article he examined different theoretical approaches as well as definitions used in the past, comparing the similarities and differences of each. In commenting on what diasporas are not, clifford makes the distinction between diasporas and geographical boundaries. Diasporas also connect multiple communities of a dispersed population.
