Document Summary

Discuss the ways in which jordan traces the differences and/or similarities between official memory and collective memory within german culture. Jordan defines collective memory as a memory that can be carried down from generation to generation. Collective memories changes according to the needs and concerns of each generation (jordan, 26). These interests demonstrate the main source of change in collective memory and commemoration (jordan, 26). In order for us to understand the concept the author uses a celebration called thanksgiving. Over the years, as thanksgiving were celebrated by each generation the values of that celebration changes according to the present day. The way thanksgiving was celebrated in the early years has changed when comparing to how we celebrate it now. Even though there were changes to events the meaning and memories of these events are still the same. When looking at official memory, it is something that the society recognizes through a personal connection to a previous event.
