Document Summary

Midterm = 2 part (1st = alone, 1 hr) 1st chapter= life & light (ch 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) **up until today refer to learning outcomes key terms recall: fundamental characteristics of all cells. Enzymes embedded in membrane for important cellular processes (cellular respiration, etc) Membrane proteins: amphipathic phospholipid bilayer (cid:523)(cid:498)amphi(cid:499) = both sides(cid:524) = hydrophilic (polar part) & hydrophobic (non-polar part) Diff lipid molecules can move within the structure. Cell in aq environment water = polar. Water & oil: water repels hydrophobic part of oil. Diff phospholipids (ex: pc, pe, ps, pi, sm) & cholesterol. Carboxylate ester bonds with 2 molecules of fa. Head group can change & provide phospholipid special features & function phosolipids can differ in: head groups (functional groups) --ex: pe = ethanolamine, ps = serine. Know that lipids are not all the same: fatty acid chain length (#c) & unsaturation (dbs) If each hydrocarbon is bond with max #h = saturated.
