Document Summary

Chapter 3 notes evolution by natural selection. Populations and species evolve, meaning that their heritable characteristics change through time. Evolution = change in allele frequencies over time. Evolution by natural selection occurs when individuals with certain alleles produce the most surviving offspring in a population. Adaptation genetically based trait increases an individual"s ability to produce offspring. Not progressive and it does not change characteristics of individuals selected changes only the characteristic of the population. All adaptations are constrained by trade-offs and by genetic and historical factors. Pattern a statement that summarizes a series of observations about the natural world; about facts how things are in nature. Process a mechanism that produces that pattern of observations. Theory of special creation: - plato and aristotle. Pattern: all species are independent (unrelated to each other), life on earth is young (6000 years old), and species are immutable/ incapable of change.
