January 24, 2013 Lecture 6: Chapter 12 – Compartments and Protein Sorting Organelle  Membrane bound compartment  Lumen – inside of the organelle  Cell= nucleus+ cytoplasm  Cytoplasm= cytosol + extranuclear organelles Why do we have organelles?  Advantageous because the functions of organelles o Increase surface area of membranes o Divide cytoplasm into functionally specialized spaces Families of Organelles  Nucleus + cytosol o Connected by nuclear pores  Secetretory and exocytotic organelles, ER, Golgi, Endosomes, Lysosomes o Connected by transport vesicles  Mitochondria  Plastids – chloroplasts and derivatives (plants) o Mito and chloros not connected to others because they have their own DNA, protein synth, mainly import protein from cytosol  Used to be endosymbiotic Topology  Math of holes, loops and knots  Lumen of ER is outside the cell, vesicle traffic connects organelles Form New Organelles  Organelles come from pre-existing organelles  All cells come from pre-existing cells Sorting signals  Problem: most proteins made on
