BIOL 2070 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Extreme Weight Loss, Eating Disorder, Operant Conditioning
Document Summary
Abnormal behaviors are learned just as normal behaviors are learned either consciously or unconsciously. After watching amanda"s story, the beahviroal paradigm could best describe the possible causes of amanda"s disorder. Operant conditioning, which can help to explain the development of the disorder. After viewing the video, it is evident amanda views her body negatively and is consequently unhappy. The principles of operant conditioning have taught us to recognize how certain coping techniques can reward, and therefore continue eating disorders. Continuing admiration is reinforcing; more weight loss, more admiration. Extreme weight loss gets attention and concern which is also rewarding. Operant conditioning is a process of learning through reward (called reinforcement in this theory) and punishment. People produce behaviour (i. e. they do things) all the time. Some of these things result in reinforcement (i. e. they bring a reward. We can use operant conditioning to try to explain. Amanda is unhappy with her body and wants to lose some weight.
