Document Summary

Basic concepts in immunology: defense from infectious disease. Immunology: is the study of the body"s specific defenses against pathogens. We are covered in microbes that help us more than harm us provide defense. Protect us from pathogens simply by taking up space (ie. microbial antagonism the competition between normal microbes and pathogens for nutrients and space; limits ability of pathogens to colonize the skin & mucus membranes) When there is a balance between infection (including amount of pathogens & virulence) and immunity (host defense mechanisms) there is no disease. If this balance is disrupted, for example from increasing infection or decreasing immunity, it leads to disease. Anatomical/physiological barriers (low stomach ph, intact skin, lysozyme in tears/saliva, ciliary clearance) innate immunity adaptive immunity (t & b cells) First line of defense is chiefly composed of external physical barriers to pathogens (skin/mucus membranes)
