Document Summary
A response to a specific molecule/ organism. The immune system can remember: invaders and react more quickly to second exposures to infection: only an exposure to the same molecule or organism will activate this memory. Normally, the specific immune system distinguishes bw self and non self and only reacts vs response non self. Immunological memory: cellular (t cells, humoral (b cells) Antigens (ag) are substances (specific molecule/organism) that induce a specific immune response and subsequently react with the products of a specific immune response. Antibodies (ab, immunoglobulins, ig) are protein molecules that are produced by plasma cells in response to an antigen and can bind specifically to that antigen. Antibodies recognize foreign pathogens and help to destroy them: neutralization: ab bind to ag blocking their activity, ab can bind to flagella and the bacteria can"t move. Macrophages and neutrophils have fc receptors that help them to bacteria and that"s the beginning to engulfment.
