Document Summary

Environmental resistance: the combination of factors that keeps a population from reaching or maintaining maximum growth rate, this changes growth from being density independent to density dependent. Exponential growth = continuous, unrealistic, unsustainable model for population growth: forms a j shaped curve, this model assumes density-independence i. e. density has no affect on population growth. Geometric growth = to display growth for episodic breeders: forms a staircase like curve, growth increases as population size increases, also density-independent and unsustainable. Logistic growth = actual, realistic model for population growth. 10: forms a s shaped curve, density-dependent growth, as crowding (density) increases, growth rate slows down. Increase in density leads to competition (specifically intraspecific competiton) Carrying capacity = k: the maximum number of individuals a particular environment can support based on amount of resources available, occurs when birth rates and death rates are relatively equal. N/ t = change in population size/unit time = dn/dt.
